LETTER FROM THE FILMMAKER
HISTORY OF OIL & MINING EXPLOITATION
Our Committee for Traditional Indian Land and Life (T.I.L.L.) was formed to give legal and media support to Native American groups defending their rights, and in particular, the Hopi Traditionals. I had heard of the Hopi and read that the name meant “peaceful people”. For a thousand years, they lived in peace and harmony on their high desert mesas in what is now northern Arizona. For myself, the Hopi approach to life came as a relief from the Cold War conflicts grabbing the headlines all through the 1960’s. The Hopi followed their ancient prophecy to protect Mother Earth by living in harmony with nature.
The Hopi elders were passionately committed to making their prophecy heard. My wife and our children and myself were extended a rare and special invitation to come to the traditional Hopi village of Hotevilla to start work on a film. For many years, we spent all school breaks and vacations, winter and summer, living among the Hopi, whom we found to be a gentle, generous, kind people.
The story of our involvement with the traditional Hopi is told in the historical biography ENCOUNTERS WITH ABORIGINAL PHILOSOPHERS.
On that high desert with freezing winters and blazing summers, the Hopi agricultural way of life had to be in harmony with nature. Their ceremonies marked the correct times for Spring planting and Fall harvest on the silt soil brought down by winter rains.
When corporations sought to drill for oil and dig for uranium and bring in electric power poles, Hopi elders saw that the dangers warned about in their prophecy were about to come true. So many elders risked their lives, throwing their bodies in front of the advancing bulldozers to protect Mother Earth.
At that time, science did not yet foresee that humanity’s increasing use of fossil fuels for an expanding population would soon reach the limit of the Earth’s capacity. But that was exactly what the Hopi prophecy said. I agreed with the elders that harmony with nature is life-or-death for humanity. I could not imagine any film project more important.
AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A HOPI(9 minutes), our documentary short with James Kots (Kootshongsie) and his son Dennis, provides a historical sketch showing the peaceful simplicity of Hopi life. The government-sanctioned Tribal Council did not support the Traditional point of view and prevented further photography on the reservation.
The Hopi elders’ request for a film expressing their prophecy captured me totally, and I could not refuse a request to do my part in alerting humanity. With credit cards and help over the years from concerned friends, family, crew people, and actors, we made the docudrama feature EARTH SPIRIT (83 minutes) to show the prophecy.
The internet developed over those years, and video footage began appearing from all over the world showing what has been done to indigenous people by oil and mining. I felt such footage needed to be collected and shown as the very fulfillment of the Hopi prophecy.
So we completed our documentary/docudrama feature PROPHECY & POLLUTION(80 minutes). This educational video shows the terrible fulfillment of the prophecy waring against oil and mining.
You can study all the published information in the World about mining and radiation, but until you see the image of a child disfigured by birth defects, you have not experienced the reality.

FILMMAKER ALAN GORG
The Hopi elders found their filmmaker in the civil rights movement by bringing his attention to their example of a simple traditional way of life in harmony with nature. Alan Gorg made the documentary short AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A HOPI (1978) presenting the Hopi view, then continued for the next thirty years, finishing the prophecy story in EARTH SPIRIT (2006) and finally documenting the terrible fulfillment of the prophecy in PROPHECY & POLLUTION (2010).

You have presented many admirable films, and your rejection of our environmental warning film PROPHECY & POLLUTION with its horrendously repulsive images of birth defects due to nuclear radiation is completely understandable. Audiences do not want to see such ugly stuff, much less pay to do so. I did not shoot those images and myself, I did not and do not want to look at them.
On the other hand, those horrors are what is true and what is happening. Those shots of birth defects from radiation should have been seen in Japan during the planning for nuclear energy, as they show what many coming Japanese children may endure.
Just as praising peace is fine but will not by itself stop those who make war, so praising good environmental practices will not stop those who would profit regardless.
My gratitude and admiration go out to the GreenScreen Film Festival in California and the S.U.R.G.E. Film Festival in Texas and Oregon and the Al Jazeera International Film Festival for having the nerve to screen the movie.
Maybe film festivals should not pretend to deal with the environment if the demands of box office conflict with showing the complete and total truth. We made PROPHECY & POLLUTION primarily in the hope teachers would force students to look to learn truth and provoke discussion, but teachers these days are afraid for their jobs, and we would give a DVD to any teacher willing to try it out in class.
Would that teachers in Japan had done so long ago! Would that everyone thinking nuclear should see these images! When I first saw these terrible birth defects, my reaction was that nothing on Earth or in the Heavens is worth what has happened to those helpless little deformed children, and the world needs to see.

On Monday, the court in Lago Agrio ruled in favor of Ecuador and decided that the Chevron Corp. will be forced to pay $8.6 billion in damages. The company is accused of polluting the rain forest in Ecuador for more than three decades while Texaco Inc., now owned by Chevron Corp., drilled for oil in the area.
Since 1993, Ecuador has filed lawsuits and demanded that the oil company pay for destroying the jungle, polluting the local environment and damaging the health of natives. Chevron’s response to the lawsuit has been negative. They claim that the current judgment is “illegitimate” and will continue to fight the fines awarded to Ecuador by the court.
This is not the first battle between a local area and an oil company. The positive results of the Ecuador lawsuit may provide hope for current environmental litigation. The lawsuits present new challenges to court systems. Cases are often complicated by extended litigation and a lack of comprehensive international environmental laws.
The Kivalina v. ExxonMobil Corp. lawsuit is still in progress. The small city of Kivalina, Alaska, filed their initial lawsuit in 2008. They claimed that dozens of oil companies were responsible for the erosion of their land by contributing to global warming. The plaintiffs asked for $400 million in damages due to climate change. Although the original case was dismissed, an appeal was filed, and it is still pending. The Washington Legal Foundation (WLF) has filed a brief urging a rejection of the appeal based on the controversial matter involved in the litigation. The Kivalina case reveals the complexities of assigning blame for global issues.
The 2010 BP oil spill has produced more than 300 lawsuits. The cases involve a range of plaintiffs. Businesses and local fishermen have created claims against BP. Resorts and hotels have joined because of lost business. In addition, investors have joined suits claiming the oil company committed fraud. The consolidation of many lawsuits occurred last year, but the cases have not ended. Plaintiffs hope that the oil company will continue to pay for damages they caused by spilling more than 4 million barrels of oil. The results of the case against Chevron in Ecuador will probably encourage and motivate plaintiffs.
The favorable ruling in Ecuador could be a positive indicator for other lawsuits against oil companies. The public is demanding that oil companies take responsibility for the pollution they have created, and the court systems appear to be listening. Environmental law will continue to be at the forefront of litigation.

Tonight on the History Channel there was a program about the impending collapse of the American empire. What provoked the Hopi prophecy into my mind was the primary cause given for the boom of billions in population–too much for our limited resources. That cause was the discovery of fossil fuels, starting with coal and then oil and natural gas.
The program concluded that extraction of fossil fuels has produced a prosperous way of life that will come to a very bad end.
That is exactly the Hopi traditional view told me more than a half-century ago.

PROPHECY & POLLUTION is a trilogy which starts with Part One, AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A HOPI, nearly fifty years ago in a quiet pueblo village where connecting with nature has provided a peaceful agricultural life.
In Part Two EARTH SPIRIT, oil and mining development threaten the indigenous pueblo people, who raise protests, citing aboriginal prophecy that incursions into Mother Earth will bring disaster.
In the third and concluding part THIRD WORLD INVESTMENT SEMINAR, prophecy is fulfilled as corporate capitalism does in fact develop oil and mining on lands of indigenous peoples all around the world, and the results are more protests, but also widespread war, disease, and death.
